Changing Unit Types Print E-mail

You may well find that following a run of bad fortune you do not have enough Groats left to maintain your unit. In the main rules we looked at some options, such as releasing fighters or selling equipment. Another option that might be worth considering is a change in unit type, e.g. turning Unpaid Regulars into Bandits.

This option can only be undertaken with the agreement of the GM, and units can only downgrade themselves to the unit types available to their race, e.g. Human Regulars can downgrade to Raiders or Bandits, but not to Warband. Of course, if you do this, the player will need to recalculate that units' maintenance outlay.

Within the confines of a campaign, the GM may well wish to restrict things further and not, for instance, let Regular troops based in a city a downgrade option, but still allow a similar unit in the countryside (away from the rest of the army and its restrictions) the opportunity to downgrading to Bandits.

Optionally, a GM may also agree that a unit can upgrade and buy its respectability, e.g. Mercenaries becoming Regulars. This is up to the individual GM, and we'd suggest that the unit is given a percentage chance of being allowed to upgrade, rather than allowing an automatic success based purely on money.
