The sun was high in the sky, and guessing from the shadows cast by the trees across the snow, Captain Ralph Steager of the Finklestein 1st Jaegers knew the time was just after mid-day. As he clutched his steaming mug of coffee he peered into its depths as if he could see a past memory unfolding before him. Just like a mountain fog dissipating within a dream. He was soon brought back to reality, by the presence of his friend and loyal sergeant Boris Von Statt, standing beside him. “ Captain the troops are ready to move out on your orders.” “Very good sergeant, douse the fires and proceed with our plans.” “Yes sir,” and with that Statt moved off to carry out his orders. Steager poured the remains of his coffee onto the fire, picked up his rifle and joined his dogs on their long and perilous journey. The Mission The object of this mission is to sneak across enemy held lines, undetected {if possible}. Standing in the way is a lightly defended undead outpost. These emplacements are scattered all along the enemy held front, usually placed between impassable tundra’s and jagged razor sharp mountain ranges. Rigorously patrolled by werewolf units and Wraith patrols. Conditions This scenario takes place just before dusk, so visibility is poor {see Slaughterloo Rule Book for modifiers.} Stealth is the key to this mission; if Steager’s unit can get passed the Undead force without a shot being fired, moral modifiers in the second mission {part two in the next L & L issue} will be increased by +1. But if they are spotted everything reverts back to normal. {Usual modifiers apply.} The Undead detect the movement of the Finklestein unit, as used in previous scenarios by 2x D6 i.e. roll 1 = +10 or more roll 2 = + 9 or more etc. Victory Conditions Total victory for the Finklestein unit if? We’ll this is a difficult one because it all really boils down to whether the Dog unit gets detected. If the Dog unit gets past the Undead outpost undetected then this warrants as a total victory. Partial victory if the Dog unit fights its way through and only loses a minimum of three troopers. Total victory for the Undead forces if, they detect the approaching enemy force and destroy them. Partial victory if the enemy force is repelled and at least five of the Finklestein troopers are killed FINKLESTEIN FORCE: - Treat all as elite. Captain Ralph Steager: Veteran Dog Jaeger officer- Armed with a standard rifle and a sword. Boris Von Statt: Experienced Dog Jaeger Sergeant – Armed with a standard rifle and bayonet. Private Patch: Experienced Dog Jaeger – Armed with a standard rifle and bayonet. Private Gilbert: Experienced Dog Jaeger – Armed with a standard rifle and bayonet. Private Grover: Average Dog Jaeger – Armed with a standard rifle and bayonet. He has magic abilities x 1 spell, roll before game begins. Private Snooty: Average Dog Jaeger – Armed with a standard rifle and bayonet. He thinks he is more superior than his fellow troopers do, and gains a +1 to his morale, but a –1 to his melee. He doesn’t mind firing a rifle but hand to hand combat, is a little beneath him Private Spark: Average Dog Jaeger – Armed with a standard rifle and a bayonet. A very bright Dog soldier indeed, always shows the initiative and is not afraid of anything. He gains a +1 to melee and a + 2 to morale. Eventually he will become an Officer, if he lives long enough of coarse. Private Barker: Average Dog Jaeger – Armed with a standard rifle and a bayonet. Private Scratch: Raw Dog Jaeger – Armed with a standard rifle and a bayonet. He is one of a pair of twins in the same unit, they both joined together. Went through training together and are now in the same unit together. When they fight side by side they are a force to be admired they fight with such tenacity, that there is not a lot that would dare standbefore them and live. Private Scratch gains a +2 in melee only when fighting along side his brother. If one of the twins should fall in battle, the other would go to pieces for the remainder of the scenario, reducing the melee stats to –2. Private Sniff: Raw Dog Jaeger – Armed with a standard rifle and a bayonet. He is the twin brother of Private Scratch. The same rules apply. {See Private Scratch.} Private Mongo: Raw Dog Jaeger – Armed with a standard rifle and a bayonet. He is not the most intelligent of Dog soldiers. But what he loses in brain capacity, he more than makes up for in size and strength. Gains a +3 in hand to hand combat and a +1 to morale. There is a downside though he is not the best of shots, so he is –2 when it comes to using his rifle. {If he remembers to load it!} Private Spook: Raw Dog Jaeger – Armed with a standard rifle, bugle and a bayonet. Scares the living daylights out of the rest of the unit, because of his dabbling in the black arts, and his understanding of the Undead ways. And terrible tooting on the bugle! The only one in the unit that likes Spook is Mongo, because he is too stupid to know any differently. Spook has magic ability x 3 spells. {Roll for before game starts.} THE UNDEAD FORCES - The Undead force consists of: 1x Average Vampire Officer: - Armed with a sword and a pistol. 14 x Fresh Zombies: - Armed with standard muskets and bayonets. Conditions The scenario should take place under night-time conditions. The Undead outpost is situated between two dense woodland areas. Usually impassable but with care and the cover of dark anything could happen. Webmaster's Notes The above was first published in Alternative Armies Loque & Load magazine in the Summer of 2003. |
