A Most Vital Matter - Reloaded Print E-mail

Sutlers - private traders who followed armies and provided their basic, and basest, needs - were essential to the effectiveness of any campaign. With a rare insight, General Wheeling-Turn organised these individuals into convoys and offered them the protection of his army in return for their services.

As the army moves through the Catalucian highlands, incident and accident leads to some Sutlers wagons becoming detached from the army convoy. One such contains Madame Palm and other lady seamstresses. All purveyors of vital services to the troops. When their loss is noticed, a section is hurried to the rear to bring the ladies safely to camp. Roland is the Ladies' handyman and guard.

As the Orcs arrive they see that the Dear Ladies are being set upon by a bunch of freebooting Dark Elven Guerrillas.

Map and Setup

Flintloque - A Most Vital Matter Map

The rescuers enter the table along the road at the bottom of the map. The brigands can be set up anywhere on the table. However the battle begins with six of them engaged in a fire fight with the Ladies ambushed wagon. The wagon ambush can be set anywhere along the road, chosen by the Dark Elf player. The Ladies and Roland set up in and around their wagon, wherever the Elves choose to ambush them. The Orcs start on the road at the lower left of the map.

The terrain is set out as indicated on the map below. The forest is dense and the farmland and broken ground should be treated as scrub land for movement purposes.

Scenario Objectives

Here are the objectives for each force in the Scenario:

The Orcs wish to see off the unruly bandits, protecting the ladies and their wagon. The brigands wish to loot the wagon and carry off any of the ladies they can get their hands on. They do not however wish to die trying. Obviously the Ladies wish to preserve their belongings and their lives. They will undoubtedly be favourably inclined towards their rescuers, who knows what reward the Orcs may receive.

Game Length

This game scenario lasts 10 Turns, after which time the Dark Elves will retreat considering it to much trouble.

Victory Conditions

The Orcs if they manage to see off all the brigands with no losses to Roland and his Ladies. The Brigands win by absconding with four or more of the ladies. The ladies win by not being absonded with. As with most scenarios the overall winner should be discussed by the players at the end of the game over a few drinks.

Scenario Special Rules

Adding more variety to a standard battle this scenario uses the follow quirky and unique special rules.

The Hunting Crossbow: Not having full access to the supplies of the Albion or Ferach troops, the Dark Elves use a combination of older weaponry and pilfered weapons. The following stats, whilst not in the Flintloque Statistics Tables v1.2, are direct from Alternative Armies and can be considered official I reckon:

The Hunting Crossbow is used mainly for that purpose in the woods of Albion and elsewhere, but some primative peoples still use it as a weapon of war. The points costs for the Hunting Crossbow are 4 (Racial) and 7 (Non-Racial). The Racial Points cost applies to non black powder races, such as Othari or some Dark Elves – use your own judgement when considering allocating points cost. It takes one turn to reload the crossbow whilst standing and two turns whilst kneeling.

0-5    5-15    15-30    30-45    45-60    60-75
75/5 65/4   50/3      35/2      15/1       -

Capturing Prisoners: To try and grab hold of one of the ladies the Dark Elf player must engage them in hand to hand combat and declare before rolling the die that they are attempting to grab them rather than harm them. If at least one wound would be scored they are considered captured, no wounds are actually dealt.

Captured: Whilst 'escorting' captured prisoners the Dark Elves receive a two column shift penalty to movement.

Rescuing the Ladies: If a character holding a prisoner is pushed back, knocked out of action or killed then control of the prisoner passes back to the original player.

Scenario Notes

This scenario was originally published in Orcs in the Hills magazine, Issue 3.

I have added to the original text and also have made slight changes to the scenario in order to match Alternative Armies new scenario format and make the scenario more accessible to players of Flintloque Reloaded.

The rule for capturing escaped prisoners is taken from Steve Blease’s excellent scenario 'Prisoner Snatch' from Orcs in the Hills, Issue 5.

The original unmodified Flintloque version can be found here.
