The "Lost Souls" are named after a very vicious battle in the Witchlands, The Battle of Mausoleomov, where they successfully countercharged the 1st Sepulcherov Guard Hussars three times, seemingly "returning from the dead" in the words of the Emperor. The three Charges managed to save the Emperor’s life by stopping the flanking of the 1er Velite Grenadiers de Garde, and allowing the Emperor to escape. They started in the centre. As the 1st Sepulcherov Guard Hussars appeared on the Velite’s left Flank, they countercharged, entered a bloody melee, and drove them off. The second unit of Hussars were meanwhile charging the right flank of the Velites, and the Grenadiers de Cheval then manoeuvered to enter the melee and destroy them. Just as this melee ended, the Winged Wraith Hussars charged the centre of the Velites, causing them to break. The Emperor failed to rally what was left of them, and the Grenadiers de Cheval, weakened, and nearly failing to pull off the manoeuvre, halted the Winged Wraiths, allowing the army to exit orderly, thus saving the Emperor’s life and the bulk of the Army.

The Emperor remarked that “The Grenadiers a Cheval had seemingly arisen from the Dead and Dying Souls (Perdu's) to save the Empire and its Honour”. The Commander of the 7th Grenadiers a heval, Colonel Ronald Terrell, was given the title "Comte de Perdue" and granted eternal ommand of the 7th Grenadiers a Cheval, the "Lost Souls".
